How does protein usage affect my hair? (Shampoos/Conditioners/Styling products/supplements)

Proteins when used properly can help restore strength and shine to the hair.

Proteins in shampoos and conditioners can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the size of the protein and how it is applied. Smaller proteins, like silk wheat or vegetable proteins will lodge inside the cortex of the hair. Larger proteins like wheat or keratin adhere to the cuticle. Styling products, when used with heat, can seal in protein for much longer usually about 1-3 months. Internal supplements of proteins like silica, bamboo, or biotin can cause all growth emerging at the root to contain protein. If your hair texture has changed since taking the supplements determine whether or not your hair requires more protein. If necessary contact the manufacture of the product containing the protein to find out how long it lasts on or in the hair. 

Any residues from the protein can cause dryness if it is not absorbed in to the hair. Additionally, during this waiting period while it lasts on or in the hair, it may cause blockage and keep Hairprint Color Restorer from working properly. Protein use should be used in a balanced manner.  More protein is not needed until the effect from the last use has faded. An overuse of protein can cause dryness, brittleness, and fragile damage prone hair.

Please know that Hairprint is a protein treatment. This is what helps bind the color to the hair and helps improve shine and strength. After Hairprint Color Restorer, using products with added proteins is not necessary or beneficial. Proteins can make the hair dry if there is already a balanced amount.

Remove proteins from your routine for 2-3 weeks if possible. This will allow your hair to stabilize. If your hair feels dry after a treatment please deep condition. You can try using light oils to deep condition: such as olive oil, grapeseed, and/or mineral oil as these contain little to no proteins. Place on hair leave for 15 minutes-3 hours. Most people benefit from at least 1 hour. You may also use one of our conditioners; Amla, Bamboo, or Kelp in this same manner. Rinse with a dime sized amount of shampoo. Style as usual.
