How to achieve residue-free hair

Hairprint® True Color Restorer needs unobstructed access to the hair in order to successfully restore your natural hair color. Unfortunately there are film-forming chemicals, compounds and ingredients labeled as "natural/organic" in nearly every shampoo, conditioner and hair styling product on the market. These synthetic ingredients coat the hair, clog the pores of the scalp, cause bacterial/fungal growth, create dryness, cause damage, hair thinning and/or hair loss. Most notably, these ingredients block the Hairprint True Color Restorers ability to restore gray to its natural color.

------------------------------

Ingredient: Quaternary Ammonium Compounds or Quats

What is it? Categorized as "natural" polymers, bromine or chlorine salts of ammonia. Quats act as anti-static agents, disinfectants, and algaecides. Many "natural/organic" hair care brands justify the use of Quats because they can start out as turnip oil, guar, sugar or honey. However, after processing these naturally derived ingredients become something more concerning, quaternary ammonium salts.

What does it do? Quats reduce static and frizz in the hair and also make it feel softer. Quats also help a small dollop of shampoo or conditioner spread effortlessly through your hair. However, Quats are the MSG of hair care;  they are addictive, damaging and unnecessary. Quats creates a suffocating build-up of residue that gums up both the inside and outside of the hair. Many quats are hormone and endocrine disruptors, they can cause acute dermatitis, and they can even release formaldehyde when exposed to heat. Furthermore, when you rinse Quats down the drain they end up in the water supply and they are toxic to aquatic life. It is best to avoid Quats for the health of your hair, your body and the planet we all share.

 Keywords to look for:

  • guar/honey/beet
  • hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride
  • behentrimonium chloride
  • behentrimonium methosulfate
  • stearylkonium chloride
  • cetrimonium or cetrimide chloride
  • dofanium chloride
  • tetraethylammonium bromide
  • didecyldimethylammonium chloride
  • babassuamidopropyltrimonium Methosulfate
  • behenamidopropyltrimonium Methosulfate
  • cocamidopropyl betaine
  • Words ending in: chloride, -methosulfate, -quat

How do I detox before Hairprint? If you have used products that contain Quats, it is best to stop as soon as possible. You will need to avoid Quats for at least 3 weeks before attempting a Hairprint True Color Restorer application. *Please note, Quats cannot be removed with our Detoxifying Chelating Shampoo. You must allow time for the ingredients to dissipate*

------------------------------

Ingredient: Silicones

What is it? Silicones are synthetic polymers not unlike plastics or rubber and they are incredibly common in shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, glosses, serums, pomades, waxes, gels, and glazes. Silicones are the most prevalent ingredient found in shampoo, conditioner and styling products. It is not water soluble and can severely build up on the hair. This build up can become so thick that you may have to scrape away the layers.

What does it do? This impenetrable residue clogs the hair, the follicles of the scalp, blocks the scalps ability to nourish the hair with sebum and causes hair loss, hair breakage and thinning.

Keywords to look for:

  • dimethicone
  • dimethiconol
  • dimethicone copolyol
  • cyclomethicone
  • phenyl trimethicone
  • methicone
  • cyclopentasiloxane
  • amodimethicone
  • Words ending in: -cone, -cane, -xane, -conol

How do I detox before Hairprint? Stop use of all products containing silicone for at least 10 days Pre-Hairpint True Color Restorer. Remove silicone residue from the hair with our Detoxifying Chelating Shampoo. Use the Chelating Shampoo several times leading up to your Hairprint application. If you feel that your hair is oily or sticky after washing with the Chelating Shampoo, wash again and leave on for 5 minutes before rinsing. If you feel you have a very heavy build-up of silicone on your hair and scalp, you may also want to use the Exfoliating Hair and Scalp Wash to manually slough away the layers of debris.

------------------------------

Ingredient: Proteins

What is it? Protein is often used for strength, shine, hydration, and to reduce breakage. Protein helps temporarily repair damaged areas in hair by filling in gaps in the cuticle. It is also used to keep hair hydrated by slowing the loss of water.

What does it do? Proteins, when used properly, can help restore strength and shine to the hair. Any residues from the protein can cause dryness if it is not absorbed fully into the hair. Proteins in shampoos and conditioners can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the size of the protein and how it is applied. Smaller proteins, like silk wheat or vegetable proteins will lodge inside the cortex of the hair. Larger proteins like wheat or keratin adhere to the cuticle. Styling products, when used with heat, can seal in protein for much longer usually about period of, 1-3 months. Internal supplements of proteins like silica, bamboo, or biotin can cause all growth emerging at the root to contain protein. If your hair texture has changed since taking the supplements determine whether or not your hair truly requires more protein. If necessary, contact the manufacture of the product containing the protein, to find out how long it lasts on or in the hair.

Key words to look for:

  • hydrolyzed wheat, soy, rice protein
  • hydrolyzed keratin
  • hydrolyzed silk protein
  • hydrolyzed Oat Flour
  • hydrolyzed Amino Acids
  • keratin
  • Variations of hydrolyzed collagen

How do I detox before Hairprint? If you are using protein infused leave-in products, please discontinue 2-3 weeks before Hairprint. If you've had a Keratin treatment, Brazilian Blowout, or  Japanese Straightening done to your hair in the last 2-3 months, please read our Transition Tips article. You will only be able to use Hairprint True Color Restorer on new growth roots until these treatment are fully dissipated from your hair. This can take up to 6 months depending on the treatment and your unique hair structure.

*Please note, Hairprint is a protein treatment. This is what helps bind the pigment to the hair and helps improve shine and strength. After Hairprint Color Restorer, using products with added proteins is not necessary or beneficial. Proteins can make the hair dry if there is an overabundance.*

Ingredient: Minerals/Chlorine/Residues

What is it? More than 80% of the USA has hard water that contains calcium, lime, magnesium and iron. These minerals create a very strong residue on the hair, just like you see on the inside of tea kettle, and makes the hair dull, limp and lifeless.

What does it do? do? Hard water minerals can negatively impact your Hairprint coverage and may cause your results to be brassy.

Keywords to look for:

Ingredient: Oils-Infusions/Treatments

What is it? Oils are very nourishing and healthy for the hair. They often leave the hair with a soft, shiny and manageable feel and can be found in shampoos, conditioners, styling products, and treatments.
